Birds

A Time for Watching Birds uses the relaxing hobby of birdwatching to visually express emotional reactions stemming from a difficult season in personal and national history. Spanning a period of 18 months, the multi-media work, made to resemble an image collection of regional and migrating birds, pairs each species with an event occurring during this time.

A Time for Watching Birds (Mixed media, 43 x 32 x 4) Regional and migrating birds were observed and photographed then painted using watercolor medium before being assembled inside a custom-fabricated display box. Viewers, upon closer inspection of the work, find each bird is labeled not as a species but with an event occurring during an 18-month period. Events include Covid and a presidential election as well as more personal topics such as the death of family and friends, illness, and reflections on stages of life such as menopause.
